How Technology Can Benefit A Child s Cognitive Development

Children use a lot of technology. They use technology whether they are using social media, using a learning program, or reading an electronic book. The truth is, that there are more positives than negatives when children use technology. There is fear that if children use too much technology they will not have proper development especially cognitively. This paper will show how technology can benefit a child’s cognitive development. One benefit is young children can learn how to read while using a device whether it is a computer, tablet, or cellphone instead of reading a regular book. On these devices, there are applications where the parent can download age appropriate books. Also, some of the books may be read along, or read out loud to them. Linda Cooper, associate professor at Pratt University says, â€Å"This way children can learn how pronounce words and learn how to read at their own pace† (2005). This is a great way to teach a child learn how to read. Some of these programs have a voice that will help a child understand and pronounce words. If the device has internet connection, a child can Google a word that they do not understand and learn the definition. However, there are a couple issues like children having a difficult time reading a regular book. They may not be able to read a regular book after learning how to read on a screen.
